NIAE Abuja 2024: Advancing Agricultural Engineering Through Emerging Technologies
The Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineers (NIAE) convened one of its most significant professional gatherings in Abuja from 14–18 October 2024, as agricultural engineers, researchers, academics, students, industry leaders and other stakeholders from across Nigeria and beyond converged for the 24th International Conference and 44th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Institution.
Held at the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Headquarters, Abuja, the conference was themed “Emerging Technologies for Agricultural and Environmental Sustainability and Food Security.” The theme reflected the growing importance of technology and engineering innovation in addressing some of Nigeria’s most pressing agricultural challenges, including low productivity, environmental degradation, climate change, food losses, inadequate mechanisation and the need to strengthen food security.
The conference provided an important platform for professional exchange, knowledge sharing and collaboration among agricultural and biosystems engineers. Through technical presentations, keynote engagements, panel discussions, exhibitions and professional activities, participants explored how emerging technologies could be translated into practical solutions capable of transforming Nigeria’s agricultural and food systems.
Particular attention was given to innovations across agricultural mechanisation, irrigation and water management, renewable energy, crop processing and storage, environmental management, digital agriculture, agricultural information systems, climate-smart technologies and other areas where engineering can improve productivity and sustainability. The conference proceedings demonstrate the breadth of research presented, including studies on solar greenhouse dryers, drip irrigation, hydrological modelling, agricultural product marketing systems and renewable-energy applications.

Empowering the Next Generation of Agricultural Engineers
A major feature of Abuja 2024 was the deliberate focus on young and emerging agricultural engineers. Student and young professional activities included an Innovation Pitch Competition, Technical Exhibition, Career Fair, Technical Visit and sporting activities, providing opportunities for participants to showcase ideas, interact with industry and gain a broader understanding of professional opportunities in agricultural engineering.
The Young Engineers Career Fair, in particular, provided a platform for students and early-career professionals to engage with experienced practitioners and industry leaders while gaining insights into career development, emerging technologies and the future direction of agricultural engineering. A dedicated session held on 16 October 2024 further highlighted the Institution’s commitment to preparing young engineers for the changing demands of the profession.

From Research to Real-World Impact
Beyond the presentation of research papers, Abuja 2024 reinforced the need for agricultural engineering research to move beyond academic publications towards technologies and solutions that can be adopted by farmers, agro-processors, entrepreneurs, government institutions and the wider agricultural sector.
The conference demonstrated that the future of Nigerian agriculture will increasingly depend on the ability to integrate engineering with digital technologies, automation, renewable energy, climate intelligence, precision agriculture, improved processing systems and innovative mechanisation. Such integration can help reduce production costs, improve resource efficiency, minimise post-harvest losses and create new opportunities for employment and enterprise development.
The gathering also strengthened professional networking and collaboration among members of the Institution, universities, research organisations, government agencies and private-sector stakeholders. These relationships are essential for developing locally appropriate technologies and creating pathways through which research and innovation can contribute directly to national agricultural development.

A Platform for Professional Excellence
The 44th Annual General Meeting provided an opportunity for NIAE members to deliberate on the affairs and future direction of the Institution while reaffirming its commitment to advancing agricultural and biosystems engineering in Nigeria.
As a professional institution and a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NIAE continues to play an important role in promoting professional excellence, capacity development, research, innovation, advocacy and the application of engineering solutions to agricultural development.
Abuja 2024 therefore represented more than an annual professional gathering. It was a convergence of ideas, technologies, expertise and aspirations for a more productive, resilient and sustainable Nigerian agricultural sector.
As Nigeria confronts the interconnected challenges of food security, climate change, environmental sustainability and economic development, the message from Abuja was clear: agricultural engineers have a critical role to play in designing, adapting and deploying the technologies that will shape the future of agriculture.
The conference ultimately strengthened NIAE’s commitment to ensuring that agricultural engineering remains at the forefront of Nigeria’s quest for sustainable agriculture, food security, technological advancement and national development.
